Housing Lotteries

What is a housing lottery?
A lottery is created when there is expected to be more applicants than affordable units available in a development. Applicants that meet the income & asset eligibility requirements are then drawn randomly in a public forum and placed in order of drawing. In most communities, 70% of the affordable units are set aside for applicants classified as a “preference” category. Typically these applicants are residents of the community, or parents, siblings and/or children; in addition to applicants who are municipal employees; such as firemen, policemen, D.P.W. workers, teachers etc. This gives the applicant the opportunity to purchase a home at a substantially discounted rate.

Active Lotteries: These are lotteries where applications are being accepted.

Coming Soon Lotteries: These are lotteries that are in the final process and about to become Active, typically within 3-6 months.

Future Lotteries: Lotteries may be held in the future for developments which are still in the permitting process. These lotteries are still in the permitting process; but may eventually become Active.

Closed Lotteries: These lotteries were conducted in the past; they have now been closed and can no longer be applied for.

First Come First Serve (FCFS)

First Come First Serve: The lottery has been held previously and it is now closed. However, applications are still being accepted on a first come first serve basis.
